Brentwood’s four-match unbeaten run ended in Cambridgeshire on Saturday. The game was decided by Brentwood’s inability to cope with Soham’s two tall centre backs, Lloyd Groves and Jordan Gent, who between them scored all the home sides goals with headers following corner kicks.
In a lively opening to the first half, Soham’s Ryan Sharman had three chances to put his team ahead in the first fifteen minutes with Dubi Ogbonna often the creator with some strong runs on the right flank.
Marcus Milner had just failed to get a firm head to a Lamar Reynolds cross in only the second minute and it was Milner who went closest to putting the Blues ahead in the 32nd minute when he cut in from the left wing and hit a powerful drive the that Soham keeper Clarke Bogard did well to stop.
Groves then gave Soham the lead two minutes before half time, heading in Ryan Horne’s corner kick at the far post.
Blues stared the second half brightly but fell further behind in the 51st minute. Lewis Moore made a very good save at the foot of the post to deny Ogbonna but from the resulting corner, Groves heading in his second of the afternoon.
Reynolds had caused the home defence a lot of problems and he had a great chance in the 59th minute when Harrison Georgiou cleverly put him through on goal but Reynold’s lob over the keeper dropped just wide of the far post. Andy Greenslade and Charlie Georgiou had shot blocked in quick succession but it was 3-0 in the 64th minute when Gent applied the finishing touch from close range with another header.
Brentwood had brought on Shad Ngandu and Andy Freeman and Freeman created a chance for Charlie Georgiou, who turned and shot but Bogard saved.
Reynolds finally reduced the arrears with an excellent shot from a free kick, hitting the ball over the wall and in off the post.
Reynolds had further chances before the end but could not find a way back into the game.
