Two second half goals by top-scorer Lamar Reynolds gave Brentwood a precious win in their relegation battle. It continues to be a nail-biting finish to the season with up to eight teams still trying to avoid the last relegation position in Ryman North.
Saturday’s game at Burroughs Park against already-relegated Great Wakering Rovers was a highly entertaining encounter for the spectators.
Brentwood took a sixteenth minute lead. Reynolds picked up the ball on the edge of his own penalty area and broke into the Wakering half before finding Andy Freeman who cut in from the left and produced a good finish into the far bottom corner of the goal.
The home side created some chances the best of which fell to Neil Richmond in the 32nd minute before they equalised two minutes before half time when ex-Brentwood defender Nikki Beale scored with an excellent, well-controlled volley from just inside the area following a corner.
Somehow, Brentwood survived a torrid first quarter of an hour in the second half, a period that twice saw the home team hit a post and twice Anthony Page had to make good saves to prevent Rovers taking the lead.
However, the introduction of substitutes Harrison Georgiou, Matt Hall and Kieran English saw Brentwood regain the initiative and they restored their lead in the 69th minute when Reynolds tapped in from close range after an impressive move between Freeman and Georgiou.
For a while, Brentwood looked in control and were virtually camped in the Great Wakering penalty area but could not find a third goal.
Brentwood then had to survive a period of pressure in the last five minutes of normal time but as the game went into stoppage time they managed to keep possession and Reynolds made it 3-1 in the 95th minute, slamming into roof of the net at the second attempt after more good work by Freeman and Georgiou.
The win lifted Brentwood Town to 19th position in Ryman North, but still just two points above Ware who are on 48 points in 22nd position, the last relegation position. With two rounds of matches still to play, Brentwood have 50 points and there are just three points separating six teams. Heybridge Swifts have 48 points, Soham Town Rangers 49, and Waltham Abbey and Thamesmead Town are both on 51 points.
