A dazzling first half performance by Brentwood earned them a surprise win over higher-league opponents and a place in the next round of the FA Trophy.
The Marketmen looked the sharper outfit in the opening stages, but Blues gradually got into the game and Nick Hilder had the first shot on target in the 17th minute. Andy Freeman had a goal chalked out for offside before Connor Martin put the home side in front in the 24th minute with a far post header from Luke Foster’s free kick.
When Foster was pulled back in the penalty area, Matt Price had the chance to make it 2-0 in the 32nd minute but his penalty kick hit the underside of the crossbar. But two minutes later Andy Freeman’s header did it make it 2-0 from another Foster cross.
Needham skipper Gareth Heath forced a good save from Anthony Page in the 38th minute but
Price cleverly back-heeled a third goal just before half time to put Blues in a commanding position, although the supporters remembered that their team had lost a 3-0 half time lead in an earlier round of the competition.
Brentwood could not maintain the momentum to the same degree in the second half, but restricted the away team to few clear chances. However, Diaz Wright reduced the arrears with the help of a big deflection in the 66th minute and, soon after, Page made a fine save from Jamie Griffiths.
Blues could have put the tie beyond their opponents in the 77th minute when Connor Martin made a good run and cross from the left wing, but substitute Izzy Bademosi blasted a shot against the underside of the crossbar from inside the six-yard box.
The Marketmen were down to ten men for the last nine minutes after Armani Schaar was sent off.
