Tuesday 9th March
RYMAN DIVISION ONE NORTH
LOWESTOFT TOWN 1 BRENTWOOD TOWN 2
Brentwood produced their best result of the season, winning at the home of the current league leaders and favourites for promotion, Lowestoft Town.
Two magnificent strikes from Ben Boyce, very early in the game, and Kris Lee, two minutes from the end of normal time, gave Brentwood their fifth win in six games and moved them up to thirteenth in the Ryman North table. Ben Stone, making only his second appearance in the Brentwood goal, made some tremendous saves in the second half as Lowestoft put the pressure on the visiting defence.
The long journey up the A12 did not seem to have affected Brentwood and they made an impressive start to the first half, taking the lead in the third minute when, following a corner, Ben Boyce hid a tremendous shot into the top corner from 25 yards out.
Brentwood continued to attack and Ross Parmenter set up Boyce for another fierce shot that forced a very good save from home goalkeeper Andy Reynolds.
But the lead did not last long. Danny Bloomfield equalised in the eleventh minute when he a converted a free kick from the left flank by Jamie Godbold, and Brentwood had an escape in the 22nd minute when Andrew Fisk got clear and slipped the ball past Stone only to see it hit the foot of a post. Reiss Noel was quick to clear the loose ball.
Both sides continued to play good football and there were plenty of chances at both ends. Matt Nolan and Joe Francis could easily have given the home side the lead as could Boyce and Joe Stevens for the visitors.
The Trawlerboys created the best chances in the second half but three times Stone denied them with some great saves.
Brentwood lost centre-back Nathan Fletcher with an injury, James Love replacing him in the 83rd minute and Lee came off the bench to replace Stevens three minutes later. It look at this stage that Brentwood would be happy to settle for a draw but Lee had only been on the pitch for three minutes when he hit a superb left-foot shot that swerved and dipped into the top corner giving Reynolds no chance of saving.
This was a fine all-round performance from Brentwood. The work rate was excellent in all areas of the pitch and if they can maintain this form they will soon climb into the top half of the league. The return fixture with Lowestoft at the Brentwood Arena in three weeks time promises to be another good game.
Brentwood Town:
Stone, Luke, Ebsworth, Noel, Fletcher (Love 83), Parmenter, Okojie, Priest, Wixon, Boyce, Stevens (Lee 86). Unused sub: Bowen
