RYMAN DIVISION ONE NORTH
BRENTWOOD TOWN 1–0 WITHAM TOWN
By Martin Voller
Harrison Georgiou scored the crucial goal as Brentwood Town ensured their safety in Ryman North with victory over Witham Town at The Arena.
Both sides hit the post in busy first half, but it was Georgiou’s cool finish after 17 minutes that proved decisive.
The second half was a cagey affair but Brentwood kept the visitors out and are now five points clear of the relegation places with just one game remaining this season.
After Heybridge Swifts’ defeat in the day’s early kick off, Brentwood knew a win would secure safety, but Witham had the games first chance after 10 minutes.
John Watson’s 20-yard free kick looked destined for the top corner, but Anthony Page scrambled across to palm it onto the post.
Seven minutes later Brentwood took the lead from Matt Hall’s long ball forward.
Lamar Reynolds gathered and stepped past one defender before threading the ball through to Georgiou whose composed strike across goal beat Lewis Snelgrove.
Witham’s Tim Monsheju had Page at full stretch to tip his low shot from the edge of the box round the post after 32 minutes.
Immediately after Reynolds almost added the Blues’ second as Sam Owusu crossed and he connected with an audacious back keel flick, only to be denied by the post as Brentwood led at half-time.
Witham started the second half well and Chinedu Osadebe twice shot over from just a few yards out, scaring the hosts.
But Brentwood responded positively and kept Witham out for the remainder of the match to seal the win and secure safety.
Brentwood: Page, Gordon, Foster, Hall, O’Rawe (C), Cavalier, Freeman, Owusu (Rees 80’), English (Duarte 70’), Georgiou (Ngandu 86’), Reynolds.
