Saturday 22nd April
RYMAN DIVISION ONE NORTH
THAMESMEAD TOWN 1 – 2 BRENTWOOD TOWN
Brentwood finished their season with a fourth successive win and, after a long fight against relegation, ended in a creditable fourteenth place in Ryman North.
Former Brentwood striker Alex Teniola caused Blues a few problems early on and he had two chances to head the Mead in front in the first five minutes, his first effort going wide and his second went straight into the arms of keeper Anthony Page.
Brentwood did not manage a worthwhile effort on goal until the 19th minute when Andy Freeman headed over from a corner. But Blues went ahead a minute later when Leon Gordon finished a chance created by Freeman and Shad Ngandu.
Home goalkeeper Max Ovenden came out to stop Andy Freeman increasing the lead just four minutes later before Thamesmead equalised in the 36th minute when Archie Johnson scored with a fine low shot from 20 yards that went just inside the post.
Ex-Blues defender Lewis Knight made a vital challenge to prevent Gordon scoring again and Ovenden saved from Ngandu to keep the match level at half time.
The winning goal came just four minutes into the second half when Lamar Reynolds scored his 27th of the season, a good finish into the far corner after a patient Blues build-up.
Page saved well from Mead sub Tommy O’Connor in the 56th minute but the visitors could have increased their lead with Ovenden, twice, saving from Reynolds.
Brentwood only secured safety from relegation with a game to spare but ended the season with 56 points after taking 22 points from their last nine games. The final relegation place went to Ware who were unfortunate to finish on 51 points but still went down with a goal difference just one goal worse than Heybridge Swifts.
Brentwood Town: Page, Pugsley (Greenslade 84), Foster, Hall (Rees 80), O’Rawe, Cavalier, Freeman, Ngandu, Gordon (Georgiou 41), Owusu, Reynolds.
