Saturday 2nd September
VELOCITY TROPHY 1st ROUND
CANVEY ISLAND 0 – 1 BRENTWOOD TOWN
Ryan O'Rawe's first half header was enough to earn Brentwood a first round victory in the Velocity Trophy at Canvey Island on Saturday.
O’Rawe squeezed a firm header through a crowded goalmouth in the 26th minute and, despite an exciting second half in which both sides had numerous chances to score, it remained 1-0 to the Blues.
Canvey threatened an equaliser through David Knight, who shot just wide in the 42nd minute, while Frank Merrifield twice shot straight at Anthony Page either side of half time.
Page made a good save with his feet to keep out a Knight header in the 51st minute just before O’Rawe nearly scored his second of the afternoon when he met a corner on the volley and forced a fine save from home keeper Henry Newcombe.
Page saved from Merrifield and George Sykes as Canvey kept up the pressure but Andy Freeman twice went close as Blues continued to catch the home side on the break.
Canvey sub Mitchell Gilbey hit the foot of a post but Brentwood should have increased their lead in the 76th minute when Freeman set up Matt Price who shot over the bar from close range.
Both keepers were busy in the final minutes with Canvey’s best chance falling to Sykes two minutes from time but Page saved well to prevent the match going to a penalty shoot-out.
Brentwood Town: Page, Pugsley, Foster, Jones, O’Rawe, Martin, Stanley (Hilton 72), Hall (Hilder 76), Price, English (Bell 90), Freeman.
