Saturday 21st October
BOSTIK LEAGUE DIVISION ONE NORTH
HERTFORD TOWN 4 – 0 BRENTWOOD TOWN
Brentwood’s six-match unbeaten run ended with this defeat at Hertingfordbury Park on Saturday.
Brentwood were unchanged from their impressive 4-1 midweek win over Ware and for the first hour looked capable of getting another good result, but they fell away in the last 30 minutes, conceding three goals and they were reduced to ten men for the last twenty minutes after Daryl Robson was shown a second yellow card.
Both sides hit the crossbar in the early stages. In the tenth minute, following a corner, Brenden Cavalier had two shots blocked by the home defence and when the ball came out to Andy Freeman, his clever lob over the crowded goalmouth saw the ball hit the bar and was then cleared. Brentwood went close again to scoring two minutes later when Nick Hilder put Matt Price away on the right of the penalty area, but Hertford keeper Charlie Mann saved well. Then at the other end, Anthony Page brilliantly tipped Michael Toner’s volley onto the bar.
Hertford took the lead on the stroke of half time, Ricky Light scrambling the ball home following a corner, but Brentwood started the second half strongly and Hilder’s shot hit a post from Price’s cross in the 49th minute.
However, the home side scored again in the 62nd minute. Matthew Thomson’s free kick was headed back across goal by Tommy Wade and Toner had time to bring the ball down and tap home from a few yards out.
Hertford made the score line emphatic with two further goals before the end. In the 74th minute, substitute Mark Summers scored at the second attempt after a mix-up in the visitors’ defence and Charlie Edwards made it 4-0 five minutes from the end with a header following another Thomson free kick.
