Tuesday 24th October
VELOCITY TROPHY 2nd ROUND
SOHAM TOWN RANGERS 2 – 3 BRENTWOOD TOWN
Trailing 2-1 at half time, Brentwood scored twice in the opening three minutes of the second half to secure a place in the third round of the league cup.
Defensively, Blues started the match where they finished at Hertford on Saturday and were lucky not to concede in the opening minutes as the home side had a number chances. A saving tackle by Connor Martin on Marcus Hall and a save by Anthony Page from Dan Hobbs kept them out until the sixth minute when Jon Kaye set up the opening goal for Lewis Endacott.
Blues had another escape in the tenth minute when Page saved at the near post and Brenden Cavalier cleared from under the crossbar, but Blues immediately broke away and equalised at the other end. Matt Price’s strong run and cross from the right was met by Izzy Bademosi who scored easily from a few yards out.
Soham retook the lead in the 35th minute after Blues lost possession and Page had no chance with an emphatic finish by Kaye.
Brentwood equalised again in the opening minute of the second half. Matt Hall’s free kick was met on the half-volley at the far post by Harry Gibbs and the shot went low inside the far post.
Two minutes later, Josh Wiggins marked his first start in the first team by putting Blues ahead for the first time with another well-executed shot.
Both sides were then reduced to ten men for the last 35 minutes when Price and Soham’s Endacott were red-carded.
The home side had chances to equalise and send the game to a penalty shootout, but Page made some good saves and Brentwood held out.
Brentwood Town: Page, Gardner, Martin, Hall, Gibbs, Cavalier, Hilton (Jones 69), Hilder, Price, Bademosi, Wiggins (Hunter 69).
