Lee's late strike ends Brentwood hopes of FA Trophy upset

Izzy Bademosi heads Brentwood in front

Saturday 25th November
BUILDBASE FA TROPHY 3rd QUALIFYING ROUND
BRENTWOOD TOWN 1 – 2 DARTFORD

Despite a stirring performance against higher-league opponents, Brentwood’s run in the FA Trophy ended on Saturday. After taking a single goal lead early in the second half, which they held until the last fifteen minutes, Brentwood had looked like causing a major cup upset, until a late goal by Lee Noble saw Dartford into the next round.

Noble, who had scored the winning goal for Brentwood the last time the two sides met in 2008, hit a 20-yard shot into the top corner in the 88th minute to complete a comeback win for the National League South table-toppers.

Brentwood had taken a 52nd minute lead when Izzy Bademosi headed home after a fine run and cross from the left by Andy Freeman.

The Blues could easily have increased their lead when Matt Hall was put through by Alfie Hilton. Hall rounded Darts keeper Deren Ibrahim but Temi Eweka cleared the shot off the line.

Dartford stepped up the pressure and good work by Warren Mfula created a shooting chance for Ryan Hayes whose shot rattled the Brentwood crossbar.

Bademosi then had a run and a low shot from the left that Ibrahim did well to get down to and hold.

Page saved a shot from Darts sub Andy Pugh in the 71st minute and this led to a series of corners which the Brentwood defence only just survived thanks to a series of blocks in the six-yard box.

But Dartford finally broke through when skipper Elliot Bradbrook headed a 76th minute equaliser.

In a goalless first half, Blues had held their own and their forward line kept the Dartford defence busy with Freeman a menace on the left, although they could not create many goal scoring opportunities.

The few clear-cut chances fell to the head of Dartford’s Alfie Pavey. His first effort, from a Lyle Della-Verde cross was well saved by Anthony Page, and Pavey then headed a corner straight into the keeper’s arms. Bradbrook headed wide from a free kick just before half time.

Brentwood Town: Page, Gardner, Martin, Jones (Wiggins 80), Gibbs, Cavalier, Hilton, Robson, Bademosi, Hall, Freeman.

Brentwood are still in two other cup competitions. They are at home to EFL League 2 club Colchester United this Thursday (30th November, 7.45pm) in the 4th round of the BBC Essex Senior Cup, and meet Shoreham at the Brentwood Arena on Tuesday 19th December in the 3rd round of the Isthmian League Cup (Velocity Trophy).

Next league match is at home to Heybridge Swifts this Saturday, 2nd December, 3pm.
