Single first half goal sees Brentwood beaten at Haringey

Saturday 3rd February

A single goal in the first half saw Brentwood beaten by play-off chasing Haringey in North London on Saturday. In a match where there could have been a lot more goals at both ends, Michael Ademiluyi’s strike in the 19th minute proved decisive.

Brentwood gave a debut to Tony Stokes the former Concord Rangers, Canvey Island and Bowers & Pitsea striker and he showed enough quality to suggest he will be a good acquisition.

Brentwood’s Anthony Page was the first goal keeper in serious action, turning a fierce shot from Anthony McDonald over the bar in the tenth minute but the visitors were keeping good possession and Alfie Hilton had a decent chance in the 17th minute as Brentwood put the Borough defence under some pressure.

However, Brentwood conceded a poor defensive goal when they were caught on the break following a corner and the pacey Ademiluyi was able to get past Daryl Robson on a one-on-one before rounding Page to score.

Brentwood got a number of shots on target but did not seriously test home keeper Valery Pajetet. Hilton had a chance with a header from a good early ball into the box by Stokes, but the finish lacked the power to trouble Pajetet.

Brentwood introduced two substitutes at the start of the second half, Jack Gardner for James Pugsley and debutant Harry Cuthbert for Ollie Bell.

Stokes went closest to an equaliser for Brentwood in the second half, hitting the outside of a post in the 77th minute, and the visitors must have felt they had dome enough to earn a least a point. However, Haringey could have increased their lead in the closing stages as the game became stretched with Brentwood pushing further forward. Page made two good saves from Borough substitute Ralston Gabriel, the second being a fine tackle outside the penalty area as the forward broke clear, and McDonald shot over the bar from close range for the hosts in stoppage time.

For Brentwood, it was another good performance with nothing to show for their efforts and they remain perilously close to the relegation spot in the Bostik North division.

Brentwood Town: Page, Pugsley (Gardner 46), Martin, Hall, Gibbs, Cavalier, Hilton, Robson, Stokes, Bell (Cuthbert 46), Foster (Hunter 74).
