Saturday 28th April
BOSTIK DIVISION ONE NORTH
BOWERS & PITSEA 4 – 1 BRENTWOOD TOWN
Brentwood’s season ended with defeat at promotion-chasing Bowers. The game was over as a contest after 23 minutes by which time the home side had a four-goal lead.
Bowers needed to win to give themselves a chance of finishing second in the league, which would mean automatic promotion to the Bostik Premier division. But with Potters Bar Town winning at Barking, Bowers had to settle for third place and a play-off match against Canvey Island on Wednesday.
Blues were stunned when they fell behind just 20 seconds after the first half had kicked off, Lewis Manor shooting home from the edge of the penalty area. It was 2-0 in the sixth minute when Ben Sartain’s shot hit a post and rebounded off keeper Tim Brown into the goal.
The Blues defence were struggling to contain the Bowers attack and Jamie Dicks and ex-Brentwood defender Martyn Stokes added two more goals. It could have been worse as Bowers missed two good chances in that opening period, but the game then became a more even contest.
Theo Jones was unlucky to see a powerful drive hit a post and Jack Gardner’s cross was met by the head of Tony Stokes, forcing a good save by home keeper Callum Chafer.
Brentwood pulled a goal back in the 34th minute when Tom Ranger converted following an Alfie Hilton free kick from the left wing.
Both teams had more chances in the second half, but Blues could not further reduce the arrears despite some great support from the visiting fans behind the goal.
Brentwood finished the Bostik North season in 21st position.
