Last Minute goal sinks Blues in opening league fixture

Saturday 18th August
BOSTIK LEAGUE DIVISION ONE NORTH
MALDON & TIPTREE 1 - 0 BRENTWOOD TOWN

Brentwood’s opening match of the season was an evenly contested affair but Sammie McLeod’s 91st minute winner earned Maldon their first win of the season.

Fielding six new signings, the visitors had a slight edge for most of the first half although Shane Cojocarel had the best chance for the Jammers and Blues keeper Rob Budd had to be quick off his line to save.

Maldon’s Jack Cawley cleared an Alfie Hilton volley off the line midway through the second half and Tobi Joseph twice went close to putting the Blues in front. Home keeper Ben McNamara came out to save as Joseph closed in on goal in the 69th minute and Joseph then hit a fierce drive for 20 yards that just missed the top corner of the Maldon goal.

Maldon put the Brentwood defence under pressure in the later stages. Maldon substitute Chris Millar hit the crossbar from close range in the 85th minute, Budd then made a fine save to keep out Cawley’s header, but from another corner McLeod forced the ball home at the far post to break the deadlock.

Brentwood Town: Budd, Gardner, Foster, Hunter, Mallett, Levett, Joseph, Mitchell (Brown 76), Coley (Rawlins 66), Hilton, Stokes.

Brentwood’s next fixture is an FA Cup preliminary round tie with Sporting Bengal United at the Brentwood Centre on Saturday, 25th April, 3pm kick-off.
