Blues scrape into next round of FA Cups

Alfie Hilton

Wednesday 29th August

Brentwood scraped into the next round of the FA Cup after another close, keenly contested encounter with Sporting Bengal on Wednesday at Mile End Stadium.

Brentwood took the lead through Tobi Joseph in the 13th minute. Rob Budd saved a penalty kick from Ashaan Siddik in the 22nd minute and then saved well again from Bobby Redwood in first half stoppage time to keep his team in front at half time.

Sporting started the second half very strongly and almost went in front when Steve Carvell almost bundled the ball home but saw his effort trickle wide via the outside of a post.

The home side were then awarded a second penalty and this time Jon Watson successfully converted to make it 1-1 in the 70th minute.

Almost immediately Alfie Hilton restored Brentwood’s lead, stroking the ball into the bottom corner following a good run on the right by Ayrton Coley.

Both sides were reduced to ten men in the closing minutes with Brentwood’s Harry Cuthbert and Sporting’s Redwood both seeing a second yellow.

It had been a classic cup tie full of incident and there was a final treat in stoppage time when Albert Levett picked up a loose throw-in and sealed the win deep with a spectacular goal from 45 yards out.

Brentwood Town: Budd, Gardner (Tyrrell 88), Joseph, Hunter, Easterford, Martin, Doyle (Coley 46), Mallett, Mitchell (Cuthbert 58), Hilton, Levett.
