Saturday 22nd September
BOSTIK DIVISION ONE NORTH
CANVEY ISLAND 2 – 2 BRENTWOOD TOWN
For not the first time this season, Brentwood conceded a costly late goal and ten-man Canvey snatched a point with a penalty kick deep into stoppage time.
Blues’ Ayrton Coley had a great chance in the ninth minute when he got clear of the home defence, but home goalkeeper Harry Palmer came out to save. Palmer also saved well from a Kojo Apenteng free kick in the 34th minute but Rob Budd was also busy in the visitors’ goal, saving from Mitchell Gilbey.
The Gulls took a 42nd minute lead when Jordan Cox headed in a Marlon Agyakwa cross at the far post. Josh Hutchinson went close to increasing the lead on the stroke of half time, but his shot was deflected over the bar and in the first minute of the second half, Budd saved from Frankie Merrifield. This proved a turning point as Brentwood equalised in the 47th minute, Tony Stokes skilfully bringing the ball down and slotting into the bottom corner.
A Luke Foster free kick clipped the Canvey crossbar in the 56th minute and Budd then denied Hutchinson with another good save.
In the 71st minute Canvey defender George Allen saw a second yellow card and against then men, Blues began to look the team more likely to take three points. However, Gulls sub Sam Collins was very unlucky to see a splendid long-range effort strike the underside of the bar, before Brentwood edged in front with an 89th minute penalty kick. Palmer fouled Blues sub Tobi Joseph and Albert Levett stepped up to score from the spot.
The drama was not yet over and in the fifth minute of stoppage time a penalty was awarded against Budd as he came out to challenge Martin Tuohy and Cox scored from the penalty kick.
Brentwood Town: Budd, Gardner, Foster (Joseph 60), Carter, Gordon, Martin, Apenteng, Mallett, Stokes (Hilton 71), Coley (Doyle 71), Levett.
