BRENTWOOD TOWN 2 – 0 WITHAM TOWN
Two first half goals saw Brentwood to three valuable points in this match staged at Dartford’s Prince’s Park ground. It ended a run of four successive narrow league defeats and gave manager Adam Flanagan his first win since returning to the club.
Brentwood’s starting line-up included three debutants, full backs Conor Mead and Jay Bacon and forward Alan Fleming, while there was a first start for another recent signing Marcus Elliott who partnered Fleming in attack.
Witham looked the brighter of the two team in the opening stages, but Brentwood went closest to scoring in the 17th minute when Bacon hit the crossbar from a free kick, with Marcus Milner hitting the rebound wide of the goal.
Brentwood took the lead in the 22nd minute when Adam Topley drilled a free kick into goal from a narrow angle on the left and Fleming made it 2-0 just before half time with a good finish from Topley’s assist.
Both sides battled hard in the second half in the increasingly wet, windy conditions. Brentwood’s Tim Brown saved from Witham’s Jack West early in the half and Blues immediately broke away, but Fleming shot wide from a good position.
Brentwood introduced another new signing, Wilberforce Ocran, a young forward, but there were no further goals and Brentwood kept a welcome clean sheet.
Brentwood Town: Brown, Bacon, Mead, Edwards, Ahern, Kemsley, Topley, Freeman, Elliott (Pugsley 88), Fleming (Ocran 65), Milner (Wiggins 90).
