Brentwood Town followed up their midweek victory against Cambridge City with a 2-1 victory away to Newmarket Town.
Blues’ manager Keith Rowland named an unchanged starting eleven for his side’s trip to Suffolk.
Early on Blues’ forward Danny Ogunleye was booked in controversial circumstances. Referee Joseph Karram inexplicably booked Ogunleye for an alleged dive just 6 yards from goal, despite the Brentwood Town man being wiped out by the Newmarket defender whilst in a goalscoring position.
Brentwood Town continued to ask questions of the Jockeys, with Olukolu causing problems on the right hand side. He picked out McKenzie with a delightful cross, but his header hit the woodwork.
It was Danny Ogunleye who eventually broke the deadlock for Brentwood, with the forward calmly side footing the ball into the bottom corner of the goal in the thirty third minute.
The Blues went in a goal to the good at the interval. Keith Rowland substituted Marlon Agyakwa for Koby Yeboah, who made his first Blues’ appearance during our midweek trip to Cambridge City.
However, it was Newmarket Town who came out of the stalls the fastest after the break, with the Jockeys looking particularly dangerous on the counter attack.
The hosts were awarded a penalty after Matt Cripps was judged to have fouled Ryan Cole in the box. Oscar Dean stepped up to draw the sides level.
Melvin Minter was called into action on a number of occasions during the second half, making a smart save down to his left from a powerful, close range shot. Moments later, he was forced to rush out of his box and timed his intervention to perfection, allowing the Blues to clear their lines.
With both sides looking for a winner, either side could have grabbed a victory. However, it was Brentwood Town who found themselves in the winner’s enclosure, courtesy of substitute Connor Hogan. The midfielder was played in by fellow substitute Benas Vaivada, and was able to score from close range deep into injury time, ensuring all three points were taken back down the M11 to Essex.
Next up is another away assignment for Keith Rowland’s side, with a trip to Suffolk once again to take on Ipswich Wanderers in a rearranged Isthmian League North Division fixture.
